Boiler Inspector Licensees

How do I qualify to be licensed as a boiler inspector?

You must hold a certificate as an inspector of steam boilers from the National Board of Boilers and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and pass the State of Maine exam. You must also be employed by an insurance company licensed to insure boilers and pressure vessels in this State.

Do I need to pass a test?

Yes. A State of Maine exam based on Maine boiler laws and rules.

How do I apply for a license?

How do I schedule my exam?

After you apply for an examination, Program staff will email an examination approval notice to you with information on scheduling an exam date.

Is my application confidential?

No. With the exception of Social Security Number, all application information is public. Contact information provided to the Program is posted on our website.

 

Boiler Operator Licensees

What does the scope of this license cover?

The holder of a boiler operator's license may operate, supervise or have charge of a heating plant having a capacity of not more than 20,000 #/HR or operate or supervise a plant up to the capacity of the license of the engineer in charge of the plant in which you are employed.

Do I need to pass a test?

Yes; 100 questions (multiple choice). You must get 70% correct in order to pass.

How do I apply to take the exam?

APPLY ONLINE or download an exam application (PDF). Submit the exam application. IMPORTANT: You must receive approval from the Board prior to scheduling your exam.

Once I pass the exam, how do I become licensed?

Complete an online license application.

Boiler Operator Training Permit

Do I need to pass a test?

No.

How do I apply for a permit?

Why do I need a permit?

You need a boiler operator training permit in order to gain the experience required to qualify for a boiler operator license. An applicant for a boiler operator's license must have 6 months' operating experience prior to examination under a boiler operator training permit.
