AUGUSTA, MAINE – Tuesday, October 20 is Election Hero Day, a nonpartisan civic holiday that celebrates the contributions of election officials, their staffs and poll workers who administer our elections all across the country.
“We are so fortunate to have dedicated state and local election officials who work incredibly hard to ensure that every Maine citizen has the right to vote. A lot of folks may not realize the long hours including nights and weekends that clerks put into running a safe and secure election,” Secretary Bellows said. “Too often election officials are under attack – getting threatened online or yelled at in person because a voter believes something they’ve read online. That’s why we think celebrating Election Heroes Day is so important. Shower your local election officials with baked goods, a card, or an act of kindness. Even a simple smile and thank you will go a long way to helping reduce stress during this busy season.”
In recognition of Election Hero Day, Secretary Bellows traveled to Westbrook today where she was joined by Westbrook City Clerk & Registrar of Voters Ellis Ledoux. Both urged voters and visitors to local city offices to treat town staff with grace and kindness.
“Every member of the Westbrook city office loves what they do and loves interacting with and helping residents, whether they are here to vote in-person absentee or stopping in to register their vehicle,” said Ledoux said. “The people behind the counter and manning the polls are your friends and neighbors who are working tirelessly to make sure everything runs smoothly from now through election day. We take incredible pride in the role we play in democracy.”
