“The Maine Student Mock Election is an engaging way for students across the state to learn about elections and have their voices heard even before they can cast a real ballot,” said Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. “We always say that voting is not a test, but we know that practicing voting before students turn 18 can help them feel prepared to participate in our democracy when the day comes. Mock election creates a fun environment for civic participation and civil discourse about the upcoming election.”

In Maine, 16- and 17-year-olds can pre-register to vote and if they are preregistered may serve as poll workers. Registered voters who will be 18 years old by Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, may vote in this year’s Election. Those who are not yet registered can take advantage of same day voter registration on November 3.

115 schools from around the state signed up to receive Mock Election materials from the Secretary of State, but due to local curricula or scheduling needs, some schools may decide to hold their mock elections at another date.
