Birth Defects

The Maine Birth Defects Program is a central source of information for families and providers in Maine. The program can help address common questions (PDF) [LINK to file in folder], connect people to resources and organizations, and help families through challenges they may encounter.

There are many reasons birth defects can occur and many cannot be prevented. Staying healthy during pregnancy can help you, your baby, and reduce the chance of some birth defects. Steps you can take to stay healthy include:

  • Have regular visits with your health care provider
  • Get 400 Micrograms of folic acide every day
  • Avoid harmful substances, like tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs not prescribed by a doctor
  • Do your best to stay healthy
