Maine's Local Health Officers (LHOs) have served Maine communities since 1885 when the role was established by Maine Statute. LHOs are appointed by their municipality, serve locally, and have an important role in the coordination of state and local public health.
LHOs have a unique "on-the-ground" knowledge of their communities, so they are often best able to assist when a resident faces a local public health challenge. LHOs coordinate with municipal colleagues and officials, the Maine CDC, and other public health partners. All work toward the common goal of improving and caring for the health of Maine's communities.
