On Sunday, May 29, 2022, at approximately 2:45 p.m. the Maine State Police responded to a crash on Springfield Road in T8 R4 NBPP near Danforth. The investigation found that the driver of a 2003 Ford Explorer was heading South when the driver crossed the center line and struck two motorcycles, an orange 2009 Harley Davidson Street Glide driven by 50-year old Don Charette of Frenchville, and a black 2012 Harley Davidson Street Glide driven by 30-year-old Jesse Ouellette of St Agatha. Charette and Ouellette were transported to a local hospital. Charette did not survive the crash. Ouellette suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both operators were not wearing helmets.
 
The Ford Explorer is registered to 35-year-old Rian Moore of Danforth. The driver of the Explorer fled the scene of the crash and has not been located. If anyone observed this crash or knows the whereabouts of Moore, please contact the Maine State Police at 973-3700.
 
The Maine State Police were assisted on scene by the Calais Fire/EMS and Danforth Fire. The Maine Warden Service and the Maine Forest Service are also assisting in the investigation. 

A crash claimed the life of one person in Dyer Brook on Wednesday morning.

On May 19, 2021 at 10:30 A.M., the Maine State Police out of Troop F responded to a motor vehicle crash in the southbound lane of Interstate 95 in Dyer Brook.  Michael Marshall, 68, of Houlton, was traveling south in a 1999 Volvo dump truck when he lost control of the truck and left the roadway.  The truck rolled over before striking several trees.  Marshall was pronounced deceased at the scene.  

Trooper Tim Saucier’s initial investigation revealed the vehicle suffered a blown tire causing it to leave the roadway.  The Maine State Police was assisted at the scene by Oakfield Fire Department, Island Falls Fire Department and Houlton Fire and Ambulance as well as Maine DOT.  Interstate 95 was restricted to one lane for several hours during the investigation.  

Speed is not considered a factor and the crash remains under investigation by the Maine State Police Troop F and the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit.  

 Maine State Police have learned that two people died in the crash that occurred on Jan. 12, 2021.

 As a result of reconstruction and investigative efforts, police learned that a major police incident that was being investigated on the southbound side of I-95 caused traffic to slow on the northbound side. A Freightliner tractor-trailer loaded with large paper rolls being driven by Lakhveer Gill, 40, of Brantford, Ontario was traveling north, behind him was a 2014 Lexus RX230, driven by Geoffrey Gattis, 68, with his wife Elizabeth Gattis, 68, in the passenger seat, both of Falmouth. Both vehicles had slowed down, when an unloaded tractor-trailer driven by David Herring, 38, of South Portland, failed to recognize traffic had slowed and struck the Lexus from behind. The force of the impact pushed the car into the back of the first tractor-trailer, crushing the smaller vehicle. Both occupants were found deceased.

The investigation is ongoing. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors. Once the investigation is complete, it will be reviewed by the York District Attorney’s Office.

Maine State Police responded to a crash in Jackson that left one man dead over the weekend.

On Dec. 26, 2020, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Troop D Troopers were dispatched to 372 Moosehead Trail in Jackson for a report of a single vehicle crash with serious injuries. A white 2005 Pontiac Grand Am was traveling southbound on Route 7 when it went off the roadway striking a culvert and a large tree. The operator, Douglas A. Bryant, 60, of Orrington, died as a result of the crash. The passenger, Troy Bryant, 45, of Belfast, was transported to Waldo County General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. It appears intoxicants may be a contributing factor to the crash. Investigation is ongoing.  

On Wednesday, November 25, at 10:25 a.m., the Maine State Police Troop C responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 95 in Waterville. On arrival, Troopers learned a blue 2003 Chevy pickup truck was traveling north at mile marker 127 and left the roadway during a snow storm. The vehicle went over the interstate guard rail near the overpass for Kennedy Memorial Drive (KMD) and landed on its roof in the westbound lane of KMD before going over another guardrail. Quickly following the collision the vehicle became engulfed in fire. 
 
The operator Gary Capehart, 71, of Sanford, and his passenger Susan Pope, 63, of Sanford were found deceased in the vehicle when first responders arrived. 
 
Westbound traffic on KMD was closed for approximately 2 hours while the crash was investigated. It is believed that speed, weather conditions, and traffic congestion due to another crash were factors. Prior to the crash Maine DOT was out maintaining the roadways and the advisory warning signs were on warning motorists to reduce their speed to 45-mph.

A Hiram man was killed in a crash in Lyman in the evening of Oct. 22. 

On Oct. 22, 2020, 11:45 p.m., Maine State Troopers from Troop A responded to a single vehicle into a tree in the area of 156 Clarks Woods Road in the town of Lyman. The driver, Aaron Mitchell, 36, of Hiram, was transported to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries and later died. Troopers believe his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a tree head on.  Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors. Mr. Mitchell was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. We extend condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mitchell.

Maine State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Machiasport Wednesday evening.

On Sept. 9, 2020, at approximately 7:17 p.m., Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a fatal crash on the Port Road in Machiasport involving a car and a motorized bicycle. The bicycle rider, Garrett Sprague, 15, of Machiasport, died as a result of his injuries.  The vehicle involved was a 2011 Buick LaCrosse driven by Caleb Norton, 20, of Machiasport.  Norton was driving east while the bicycle was traveling west, and the collision occurred in the eastbound lane. Troopers learned that the motorized bicycle was in the on-coming lane for unknown reasons.  

Trooper Andy Foss responded as the primary investigator and was assisted at the scene by Sergeant Jeff Ingemi, Corporal Micah Perkins, Troop Investigator Josh Lander, and Washington County Sheriff’s Department.  A crash reconstruction and forensic mapping are being conducted along with a vehicle autopsy. 
 
Poor visibility is a factor in this crash where there was thick fog at the time of the crash. 

Machiasport Fire Department and Machias Ambulance also assisted.  Investigation continues.
 

A Belmont man was killed after his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming dump truck.

On Aug. 5, 2020, at approximately 7:48 a.m., Maine State Police responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash on route 3 in Morrill.  The investigation revealed that Nicholas Day, 34, from Belmont, was traveling west on route 3 and crossed the center line into an oncoming loaded dump truck.  Day was determined to be deceased on scene.  

The operator of the dump truck was a Eugene Hyde, 31,   from Wilton, owned and operated by C.H Stevenson out of Wayne Maine.  The investigation is still on going, speed and alcohol did not appear to be a factor.   

Route 3 was shut down for 8hrs.  Local fire departments assisted with traffic being rerouted.    
 

On April 14, 2020, Maine State Police Troopers responded to the Tunk Lake Road in Sullivan just after 11:00 pm for a vehicle crash with entrapment. After first responders arrived a passenger in the vehicle, John-Michael Boucar (33) of Sullivan was pronounced deceased at the scene. Another subject was transported to the hospital.
