Our season begins June 17

NEW THIS SEASON - Our large ecosystem display tanks will focus on aquaculture and innovative research gear!

Aquaculture is a vital part of Maine’s blue economy, particularly kelp and scallop aquaculture. Visitors will learn about the ecological role of kelp and scallops in the Gulf of Maine, as well as the science and management behind aquaculture in the region.

To gather the information needed to support healthy marine ecosystems and sustainable fisheries, DMR combines innovative technology with scientific expertise. The specialized gear you will see on display represents some of the tools used by our scientists to study the Gulf of Maine.

Learning Lab

The Learning Lab is located at DMR’s Boothbay Harbor marine science research facility, adjacent to the Maine State Aquarium. The space is where audiences can take a deeper dive into what makes the Gulf of Maine ecosystem so unique. In this hands-on, interactive lab setting, visitors can investigate the real-time research DMR’s scientists are conducting in their own laboratories onsite. The Learning Lab is intended to be a window into DMR’s research lab, an engaging space where ocean discovery begins for audiences of all ages. It is also an introduction for the community to participate directly in DMR research alongside our researchers.
