Notifying Non-Member Facility Owners

In Maine, anyone using power tools to penetrate the ground (including private property owners) is required to notify DIGSAFE at 811 or 1–888-DIG-SAFE (888–344–7233) or www.digsafe.com at least 3 business days prior to digging. DIGSAFE will then notify the owners of underground facilities that are members of that system. However, not all owners of underground facilities are required to be members of the DIGSAFE system.

As a resource to assist you with identifying non-member facility operators that may own or operate underground facilities within your pre-marked area of excavation ,this directory, the Maine Public Utilities Commission’s “OK-TO-DIG” directory, provides contact information for non-member, underground facility operators.

You must still notify DIGSAFE three days prior to digging. Get more information about Maine’s Underground Facility Damage Prevention requirements.

Please note that while the Maine Public Utilities Commission has tried to make this directory as accurate as possible, it may contain errors and omissions. As the excavator, it is your responsibility to identify and notify all owners of underground facilities in the vicinity of your excavation, whether they are indicated by this directory or not. There may be non-member facility owners that you are required to notify that are not included here (for example, private property owners).

Check this system prior to each excavation to ensure that you have the most accurate and up to date information.

If you have any questions, please call the MPUC at (207) 287–3831 or toll free at (800) 452–4699.
