Wildlife Safety

It happens all the time. In Maine, cars and trucks crash into moose and deer thousands of times every year. It's a big problem. Of course, most people are delighted to see a beautiful white-tailed deer or a majestic bull moose. But few people know how to handle a head-on encounter with Maine's largest and wildest creatures. The following safety tips will help you avoid the tragic results of colliding with moose, deer, and bears.

Crash and Safety Data

Crashes are devastating, with 30,000 - 35,000 fatalities occurring in the US in an average year. MaineDOT can extract any police reported crash data from its data warehouse. The crash data can report on statewide trends, corridor performance, or a particular item of interest such as moose crashes. Data does help drive our strategies and direct funds that are dedicated to safety improvements. The linked information here provides recent crash data findings of interest.

Work on the superstructure has seen the completion of bridge drains, with rebar work scheduled there for late this month. Workers at Pleasant Cove completed the installation of driving sheets and splicing piles.
