Limited Scope Section 4(f) Re-evaluation for the Frank J. Wood Bridge Project

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Maine DOT have completed a Limited Scope Section 4(f) Re-Evaluation for the Frank J. Wood Bridge Project (WIN# 22603.00).  The project consists of replacement of the Frank J. Wood Bridge (#2016) on a curved upstream alignment. The bridge carries US Route 201 over the Androscoggin River between Brunswick and Topsham, Maine.

The MaineDOT Work Plan outlines the work that the department plans to perform over the next three years. The Work Plan is calendar year-based and includes all MaineDOT work activities. Projects and activities listed for Calendar Year 2026 have the most definite schedules and estimates, while those for Calendar Years 2027 and 2028 may be more subject to change.

May 2024

In May CPM completed the Pier pedestals, completed Abutment 1 and 2, set steel girders from Abutment 1 to the Pier. Shaw Brothers installed underdrain and catch basins, installed stone ditch protection along the South Bound on ramp slopes and loamed and seeded slopes.

  • Early September 2023 Detour pedestrians to 2 Cent Bridge
  • November 2024 Detour Eastbound and Westbound Traffic over Carter Memorial Bridge (full bridge closure, no traffic EB or WB on Ticonic Bridge)

History of the Ticonic Bridge

The 113-year-old Ticonic Bridge is scheduled to be replaced as part of a $52.8 million construction project, $25 million of which will be provided as a grant by the Federal Highway Administration. It will be undertaken to address significant deterioration of the structure and will provide a new and modern structure that will serve the community for the next 100 years.
