Voting for My Maine Sign Contest to Begin

Augusta - Voting begins on Friday, April 20th for the My Maine Sign! contest.

For the past two weeks, MaineDOT has been pouring through nearly 2,000 safety related messages submitted to the My Maine Sign contest. The messages are designed to fit on highway message boards that are displayed throughout the state. The department has selected 60 top messages that are funny, smart and clever dealing with safety subjects such as distracted driving, speeding, tailgating, impairment, even eating while driving. Any of those 60 may appear on the highway signs in the future.

Lit Cigarettes Causing Roadside Fire Problems

Augusta - The Maine Department of Transportation and the Maine Department of Public Safety are asking for the public's help in making sure smokers extinguish their cigarettes inside of their vehicles.

Recent roadside fires have been attributed to lit cigarettes being discarded out of the vehicle's window and onto the roadway where they have rolled into the surrounding grass and brush. The fire danger is worsened during the warm and dry weather.

Please help to prevent these incidents from occurring by making sure the cigarette is extinguished and not thrown out the window.
