Foundational Literacy

two kids talking with cans and stringFoundational literacy skills are the critical components that develop proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Strategic high-quality instructional practices in the areas of print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, and fluency work together with vocabulary, background knowledge, and writing to support the development of college and career-ready students who are able to successfully communicate and comprehend information.

Maine’s Literacy Academic Standards:

  • Maine Learning Results: English Language Arts. The ELA standards in Maine were updated by Maine educators in 2019 and adopted into rule on July 18, 2020. The updated standards are a revision of the Common Core State Standards.
  • Maine's Early Learning and Development Standards. These guidelines direct State and local early care and education practitioners’ efforts to improve early childhood professional practice and programs for young children ages three through their entrance into kindergarten. The guidelines also consider the core elements contained in the Maine Learning Results.
  • Core Content Connectors. The Core Content Connectors [CCCs] are Maine’s alternate achievement standards in mathematics.  These standards are derived from the Common Core State Standards, reduced in complexity and deconstructed into smaller, more accessible steps for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities.  The CCCs are the building blocks of Maine’s alternate assessment in ELA/literacy, the MSAA.  For more information about alternate assessments based on alternate achievement standards (AA-AAS), please contact Jodi Bossio-Smith at: jodi.bossio-smith@maine.gov.
