Getting Ready for a New Baby? See What MaineCare Covers!

Can my newborn baby get MaineCare?

Yes. After your baby is born, call the Office for Family Independence (OFI) at 1-855-797-4357 as soon as possible to add your baby to your MaineCare coverage. Once you add your newborn to your case they will be given a MaineCare ID. You can write that down and show it to any medical providers (including pharmacies) until you receive their MaineCare card in the mail. If you do not add your baby to your MaineCare coverage right away, you may get a bill from the hospital.

If you had MaineCare when your baby was born, the baby will have MaineCare until their first birthday even if your income changes.

What newborn services does MaineCare cover?

Some examples of services that may be covered by MaineCare include:

  • Doctor's visits,
  • Vitamin D supplemental products (These may vary. Ask your pharmacy about the options for covered Vitamin D supplemental products when you pick up the prescription),
  • Vaccines
  • Prescription medicines.

Some services, like male circumcision, require prior authorization. MaineCare will cover the service only if it is medically necessary and prior authorization is approved. If it is not approved, MaineCare will not pay for the service.

If I had my newborn circumcised without an approved prior authorization, will MaineCare refund me?

No, MaineCare can’t pay back members for services. We can only pay medical providers directly. MaineCare never sends payment directly to members for services.

MaineCare will only pay back enrolled medical providers for MaineCare covered services. MaineCare does not pay back MaineCare members for covered services that were obtained without prior authorization.
