Maine’s Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) is a statewide prioritized listing/program of transportation projects, covering a period of four years, and is consistent with Maine’s long-range statewide transportation plan. The STIP includes the Transportation Improvement Programs (TIPs) of Maine’s four Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPOs).
MaineDOT’s Family of Plans is a set of multimodal and modal transportation planning documents that lay out the department’s vision for Maine’s transportation system, present recommendations for how to achieve the vision, and lay out the path to implementing them.
The Bureau of Planning is MaineDOT’s primary point of contact for Maine’s Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), Regional Planning Organizations (RPOs), municipalities, other stakeholders, and members of the public for all modes of transportation. It is also home to MaineDOT’s Tribal Liaison. The Bureau of Planning carries out long-range planning efforts and helps develop MaineDOT policies. For municipal support, the MaineDOT Community Services Division and the Maine Local Roads Center are located in Planning.
The Public Transit Advisory Council is a voluntary board established in statute to advise the State Legislature and the Maine Department of Transportation on public transit services in the state. Council members are appointed by the MaineDOT Commissioner and represent a broad range of perspectives. The Council is administered by MaineDOT.

In the 132nd Maine Legislature, LD 1451, Resolve, Directing the Department of Transportation to Establish the Maine Coordinating Working Group on Access and Mobility was enacted, requiring MaineDOT to establish this working group and develop an implementation plan to establish a mobility management approach. This implementation plan will include a timeline, budget and staffing plan, and will be captured in a report to the Transportation Committee of the Maine Legislature.
The state of Maine was the 49th state to create an Adopt-A-Highway Program. MaineDOT’s final rule was adopted on February 22, 1999, and amended slightly in July, 1999 to include "town ways." This site will provide you with everything you need to know about this program.
