Oversized Load Transport to Impact Traffic Between Jay and Portland
Drivers should plan ahead for delays, road closures, and traffic pattern adjustments.
AUGUSTA – September 28, 2026 —The Maine Department of Transportation is issuing an advisory of an oversize load transport of a heat recovery steam generator by Barnhart. On September 29, the transport will begin moving out of Jay at 6 PM and will continue to the next holdover point of either Oxford or Turner until 6 AM. This move is expected to take at least two nights and will involve a convoy of support vehicles, law enforcement escorts, utility crews, and specialized transport personnel. This load will be moving very slowly and may cause delays.
Due to the size of this transport, the load and support team will occupy most of the roadway along several sections of the route. The load is 20 feet wide, nearly 20 ft tall and nearly 220 feet long. The load will take up the width of two traveling lanes. Residents and businesses along the route are asked to avoid parking on the street during the movement window. Parked vehicles could obstruct the convoy and create unsafe conditions.
The route for the move is Jay: Riley Road to Crash Road; then Route 4, Route 117, Route 26, U.S. Route 202, Route 22, U.S. Route 1, Broadway, and Elm Street in South Portland.
Motorists may experience temporary delays, rolling road closures, and traffic pattern adjustments as the convoy progresses. Local police departments and support crews will be managing intersections and roadway access to ensure safe passage.
This transport is the first of nine total oversize loads scheduled to move along this route. After the successful delivery of the first load, an updated movement schedule will be released for the remaining eight loads. The next transports are expected to take place over multiple nights over the next two months.
