Reptiles and Amphibians

The Visitor Center houses a variety of snakes, turtles, frogs and salamanders in large, secure exhibits.

Box Turtle

So called because they can close up their hinged lower shells, called the plastron. Box turtles are endangered in Maine, extremely rare, and found only in the very southern part of the state. Learn more about box turtles from Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Wood Turtle

This is a beautiful, large and protected turtle that is considered a species of special concern here in Maine. Unfortunately for this species, they are highly desirable in the pet trade, and are often ‘stolen’ from the wild to be sold on the pet market.
