Introduction
The Department of Environmental Protection's Road Salt and Sand-Salt Storage Area Program is responsible for mitigating the effects on ground and drinking water from piles of uncovered salt and mixed sand-salt.
The program includes assistance with the siting of new salt storage areas; an on-going registration program for sand-salt piles; implementation of siting and operational rules, and investigation of complaints involving chloride contamination of drinking water wells, as time and resources allow.

The Road Salt and Sand-Salt Storage Area Program is a cooperative effort of the the Maine Department of Transportation (DOT) and Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Historic priority rankings
- All salt storage areas will be required to follow the rule requirements based on their 1999 prioritization or are considered new salt storage areas.
- Please contact Laura Crossley to find if your salt storage area was previously prioritized and registered or needs to be registered now.
Investigation of complaints
- Complaints involving chloride contamination of drinking water wells are investigated as time and resources allow.
