Literacy for ME

Literacy for ME Banner

Literacy, as defined by the Maine Department of Education, is the ability to construct and convey meaning for a variety of purposes through an array of contextual forms and symbols, including reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.

Literacy for ME is the Maine Department of Education's Statewide Literacy Plan. The plan, originally launched in 2012 and updated in 2022, sets a vision for the Department of Education's efforts to support strong literacy achievement and provides guidance and resources for Maine's public schools and community programs as they engage in ongoing literacy education efforts. Grounded in research-based literacy practices and organized around key components central to building comprehensive literacy programs, Literacy for ME recognizes the increasing demands for a variety of literacy skills necessary across all disciplines, careers, and our democracy as well as for advancing culturally responsive practices.

Literacy is the gateway to life-long learning and academic success and a bedrock for a highly skilled workforce, robust economy, and culturally responsive society. Access to high quality literacy instruction is foundational to ensuring educational equity. A statewide literacy plan provides a structure for promoting a reliable system of supports.
