Is my proposed business a public water system?

If you plan to have your own well, and serve water to the public (more than 25 people per day) for more than 60 days a year, your facility meets the definition of a public water system under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Restaurants that offer water, post-mix soda, or make their own ice are public water systems.

What are the requirements for a public water system?

Your well must be approved, and you will need to conduct regular water quality testing to protect public health. A Drinking Water Program field inspector will assist you in finding a location for your well.

May I use my existing well as a public water system?

If the well meets setback and water quality requirements, we may be able to approve its use as a public water system. You should consult with the Drinking Water Program at 287-2070.
