Safe Storage for ME is an Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP) initiative in collaboration with medical and adult use cannabis retailers and public health advocates statewide.
Like other age-restricted or prescription products, cannabis and cannabis products at home should be stored in a locked container, out of reach, and out of sight of children and pets. Safe Storage for ME aims to proactively promote these responsible storage habits by providing patients and consumers with access to free lockable storage bags at the point of sale, with the overall goal of reducing accidental ingestions and youth/pet access to cannabis at home.
OCP first distributed safe storage bags in 2024 through a pilot program. The safe storage bags will be available again in Fall 2026 at over 140 medical and adult use retail stores across Maine. Any medical cannabis patient over the age of 18 and adult use consumer over the age of 21 is eligible to receive one bag, no purchase necessary, while supplies last. Please find a list of participating retailers below.
Note: Bags are being distributed to participating retailers by OCP and public health advocates on a rolling basis. Bags will be available in early September at most participating retailers in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Kennebec, and Somerset counties. Bags are expected to be available at all other participating retailers by early November.
