WHEREAS, the State of Maine has long been shaped by the proud and enduring traditions of our working waterfronts, where generations have built their lives and livelihoods on the sea; and
WHEREAS, commercial fishing remains one of Maine’s most iconic and economically vital industries, supporting thousands of hardworking men and women and contributing significantly to coastal communities and the state’s heritage, economy, and way of life; and
WHEREAS, the risks faced by Maine’s fishermen are real and constant, with unpredictable weather, treacherous waters, and the physical demands of the job posing dangers each day they set out to sea; and
WHEREAS, too many have made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of their work, and Maine communities continue to bear the deep and lasting sorrow of lives lost to the sea; and
WHEREAS, July 21, 2025 shall serve as a solemn day of remembrance for those we have lost, a time to honor their lives and contributions, and to extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends, and fellow fishermen; and
WHEREAS, on this day, Maine organizations that support fishing communities have come together in a call to action – to renew our shared commitment to improving safety and recovery in the commercial fishing industry, strengthening training, resources, equipment, and awareness to protect those who continue to work on the water; and
WHEREAS, through remembrance and responsibility, we honor the past, safeguard the present, and ensure a more secure future for all Maine fishermen;
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim July 21, 2025 as
Maine Commercial Fishing Remembrance Day
throughout the State of Maine, and I urge all citizens to pause in honor of our fallen fishermen, to support the commercial fishing community, and to recommit to promoting a culture of safety and wellness on and off the water.
