Governor addresses summit of world leaders focused on advancing opportunities in the bioeconomy
Dublin, IRELAND – Governor Janet Mills today kicked off a four-day mission to Ireland at Blue Ambition 2026, a global gathering of policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers focused on innovation, investment, and growth in the blue bioeconomy.
Blue Ambition was held during the first day of the fifth Global Bioeconomy Summit, a four-day convening of world leaders focused on advancing bio-based economic opportunities. Over the coming days, the Governor will discuss trade and investment opportunities with Irish businesses and hold bilateral meetings with Irish government leaders on trade, renewable energy, and educational initiatives.

As a result of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, Ireland has emerged as North America’s economic gateway to Europe. Recognizing the realignment and its impact on Maine businesses, Governor Mills signed legislation in 2023 creating the Maine-Island of Ireland Trade Commission to promote bilateral trade opportunities between Maine and Ireland. Ireland currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

“Maine and Ireland share more than our rocky coasts and rolling green hills; we are united in our common values of resilience, community, and respect for our traditions—especially our maritime heritage which continues to drive innovation and opportunity across our blue economies,” said Governor Mills. “I’m grateful to visit Ireland to explore new ways to strengthen our ties and to meet with government and business officials to expand opportunities for collaboration on everything from oyster farming to education. I look forward to building on our great partnership to create a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
Today, the Governor highlighted Maine as a great place for investment during afternoon remarks to Blue Ambition attendees, met with economic and government leaders from across the world, and discussed opportunities for trade and collaboration during a bilateral meeting with Irish Agriculture, Food, and Marine Minister Timmy Dooley.
The Governor arrived in Ireland over the weekend and last night met with Senator Mark Daly, Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Éireann (President of the Irish Senate). In 2021, Senator Daly launched the American Irish State Legislatures Caucus, a bipartisan network of current and former legislators in the United States and Ireland. Senator Daly visited the Maine State House in 2024 as part of his extensive travels across the United States.
The Governor’s Office will release additional updates and photos from the Governor’s trip in the coming days. The Governor will return to Maine later this week.
