ME PMP AWARxE Role Definitions

Here are the roles within the ME PMP AWARxE platform.  Please consult the following definitions when selecting a ME PMP AWARxE User Role.  If you have questions, please call (207) 287-2595 and choose Option 2 or email PMP@maine.gov for help:  

Prescriber Role Types

  • Physician (MD, DO), Dentist, Nurse Practitioner/ Clinical Nurse Specialist, Midwife with Prescriptive Authority, Physician Assistant, Medical Resident with Prescriptive Authority, Podiatrist (DPM): A clinician who has prescriptive authority, these clinicians will have their own active DEA number.  This role gives clinicians the ability to query patient dispense records within ME PMP AWARxE to ensure that there is no abuse, misuse or diversion of controlled substances.
  • IHS Prescriber: An Indian Health Services clinician who has prescriptive authority, these clinicians will have their own active DEA number.  This role gives clinicians the ability to query patient dispense records within ME PMP AWARxE to ensure that there is no abuse, misuse or diversion of controlled substances.
  • VA Prescriber: A Veterans Administration clinician who has prescriptive authority, these clinicians will have their own active DEA number.  This role gives clinicians the ability to query patient dispense records within ME PMP AWARxE to ensure that there is no abuse, misuse or diversion of controlled substances.
  • Military Prescriber: A Military clinician who has prescriptive authority, these clinicians will have their own active DEA number.  This role gives clinicians the ability to query patient dispense records within ME PMP AWARxE to ensure that there is no abuse, misuse or diversion of controlled substances.
  • Veterinarian: A veterinarian with a valid, active DEA number and controlled substance prescriptive authority.  This role allows veterinarians to query non-human patients in the ME PMP AWARxE to ensure that there is no abuse, misuse or diversion of drugs. Veterinary PMP users will only have access to non-human controlled substance dispensing data. 
  • Prescriber Delegate- Licensed OR Prescriber Delegate-Unlicensed: Prescribers may query patient dispense records but may also delegate this task to a designee.  Both the Prescriber (acting as the delegator) and the Prescriber Delegate must be registered and authorized to use the ME PMP AWARxE. Once activated in ME PMP AWARxE, the Prescriber or Prescriber Delegate may then create a relationship within ME PMP AWARxE .

 Pharmacist Role Types

  • Dispensing Physician: A clinician who queries and views patients’-controlled drug history prior to dispensing a controlled substance and submits ASAP files and dispense data to the ME PMP AWARxE. An example could be an independent pharmacy that submits its own ASAP files and dispense data independently of a third-party company that submits ASAP files on its behalf.
  • VA Dispenser: A Veterans Administration clinician (i.e. pharmacist) who views and queries patient data prior to dispensing a controlled substance but does not submit ASAP files or dispense data to the ME PMP AWARxE. This role requires a valid, active DEA number.
  • Pharmacist: A clinician (i.e. pharmacist) who views and queries patient data prior to dispensing a controlled substance but does not submit ASAP files or dispense data to the ME PMP AWARxE. This role requires a valid, active DEA number.
  • Pharmacist Delegate-Licensed OR Pharmacist Delegate-Unlicensed: Pharmacist may query patient dispense records but may also delegate this task to a designee.  Both the Pharmacist (acting as the delegator) and the Pharmacist Delegate must be registered and authorized to use the ME PMP AWARxE.
