About Us

The Attorney General is Maine's chief law enforcement officer and represents the state in legal matters. The duties of the Attorney General are established by the Maine Revised Statutes Annotated, Title 5, sections 191 - 205. These statutes direct the Attorney General to discharge various responsibilities, including representing the State and its agencies in civil actions; prosecuting claims to recover money for the State; investigating and prosecuting homicides and other crimes; consulting with and advising the district attorneys; enforcing proper application of funds given to public charities in the State; and giving written opinions upon questions of law submitted by the Governor, Legislature, or state agencies.

The Attorney General may appoint deputy and assistant attorneys general, all of whom serve at the pleasure of the Attorney General. In addition to these statutory powers, the Attorney General is vested with certain other powers deriving from the Office's common law powers. The Attorney General is also a member of the Baxter State Park Authority, overseeing the 209,000 wilderness acres of the Baxter State Park. The work of the Attorney General's office is organized across various divisions and special projects.

Attorney General Aaron M. Frey was born in Bangor. He lived with his family in Bangor until third grade, at which point he moved to Dixmont. He is a graduate of Nokomis High School in Newport, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and he earned a Juris Doctor from Roger Williams University School of Law in Rhode Island.

Prior to being elected to serve as Maine’s 58th Attorney General, Mr. Frey worked in a private legal practice in Bangor, focusing on matters involving criminal defense and family law. He represented part of Bangor and part of Orono for three terms in the Maine House of Representatives, from 2012 to 2018. In the Legislature, he was a member of the Legislature’s Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.

The Attorney General is Maine’s chief law enforcement officer and represents the state in legal matters ranging from child support enforcement, civil rights and consumer protection to the prosecution of homicides, felony drug cases and major frauds. The Attorney General is also a member of the Baxter Park Authority, overseeing the 209,000 wilderness acres of the Baxter State Park.

Mr. Frey presently resides in Bangor.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Chris Taub

Chris Taub graduated from Cornell University in 1989 and received his law degree, magna cum laude, from Boston University School of Law in 1995. He joined the Office of the Attorney General in 1999 as a member of the Civil Litigation Division and remained in that position until 2019, when he became Chief of the Litigation Division. In 2021, Attorney General Aaron M. Frey appointed Chris as Chief Deputy. During his career with the Attorney General's Office, Chris has litigated numerous cases in state and federal court in matters involving federal civil rights laws, employment discrimination, federal environmental laws, the Maine Tort Claims Act, the First Amendment, federal preemption, the Freedom of Access Act, breach of contract, the Americans With Disabilities Act, and Medicaid law. He has argued numerous appeals in the Maine Law Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, as well as an appeal in the United States Supreme Court.
