Death is the first fatal case in 2024, one of three infections identified this year from the tickborne virus

AUGUSTA – The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) today confirmed the first fatal case of Powassan virus infection in Maine this year. The death occurred in York County. The last prior death from the tickborne virus in Maine occurred in May 2023.

AUGUSTA– The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced today that it received $1.7 million in federal grants to foster resiliency for individuals impacted by severe weather this past winter.

MaineCare discovered that some hospital non-emergency claims failed to price correctly and were overpaid. This occurred when there was more than one emergency room service on the claim, for claims submitted for Dates of Service from January 1, 2022, and March 31, 2024. MaineCare reimburses differently in cases where non emergent use of the emergency room is determined.

No provider action is required as MaineCare will re-process these claims.
