Maine State Archives to offer Halloween tour during American Archives Month

AUGUSTA - The Maine State Archives will celebrate American Archives Month this October with a tour of the Archive’s holdings on Halloween, Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2017.

The archivists will host this Halloween-themed tour, which will begin at 3:30 p.m. and include access to areas that are not normally open to the public. To reserve your spot on the tour, please contact Communications Director Kristen Muszynski with your full name and phone number. The tour will be capped at 20 participants. (No large groups, please.) The Maine State Archives is located in the Cultural Building, 230 State St., across from the statehouse in Augusta.

Visitors to the Archives can view the current exhibit on the Aroostook War, Maine’s northern border dispute, and are encouraged to return in November for the unveiling of this year’s fall exhibit, commemorating the centennial of World War I. The Archives exhibit will include information on Mainers’ response to the Halifax Explosion tragedy in Nova Scotia in 1917, to coincide with a special event planned for Nov. 20: The Nova Scotia Christmas tree for Boston will make a stop in Augusta to recognize Mainers’ role in the emergency response after the explosion.

On Wednesday, Oct. 4, the Maine State Archives will also be participating in the #AskAnArchivist event on Twitter, in which people from around the world can submit questions for archivists to answer.  To take part in this outreach event, sponsored by the Society of American Archivists, simply include #AskAnArchivist in your tweet and participating archivists will respond.
