Maine National History Day Winners Announced

Winners Qualify to Compete at National Event in Washington, D.C.

AUGUSTA, MAINE—Secretary of State Matt Dunlap applauded students from 24 Maine schools and two homeschools for their efforts in preparing entries for the Maine History Day competition, held yesterday at the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine and the University of Maine at Augusta.

History Day is a national competition where individual students and small groups, in grades 6 through 12, prepare papers, exhibits, documentaries, performances or websites that explore a broad historical theme.  The topic for the 2013 competition is: “Turning Points in History:  People, Ideas, Events.”

Competitors were judged by experts in history from around Maine.  The winners of the several categories qualify to move on to the national competition held at the University of Maryland outside of Washington, D.C. June 9-13.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap addressed the audience at this event that drew 246 students.  “National History Day is one of our signature events,” said Dunlap. “Students do great research and thread the results really well into current events, so that the relevance and importance of historic methodologies are brought out in high relief. It’s a fun, informative, and exhilarating day that brings incredibly bright students together from all over the state.”

The Statewide competition was made possible with the support of the Maine Humanities Council, Maine Historical Society, Margaret Chase Smith Library, University of Maine, Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine, and historical societies from across the State.
