Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap Encourages Maine Businesses to Accept Driver’s Licenses/IDs with Military Service Designation as Proof  of Status for Military/Veteran Discounts

AUGUSTA, Maine – This Memorial Day Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap would like to remind Mainers about the new Military Service Designation available for Maine driver’s licenses and IDs.  The designation features a Field of Stars backdrop in the photo and is currently available at all Bureau of Motor Vehicle locations to eligible Maine veterans and military service members.

The Military Service Designation was made possible through legislation passed by the 125th Legislature and signed by Governor LePage.

This designation is available to Maine residents who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces or veterans who provide verification of honorable discharge from the United States military (DD Form 214) or certification from the United States Veterans Administration to verify their military service and honorable discharge.  Applicants will also have to bring documentation verifying Maine residency and legal presence in the United States if they have not already done so (a complete list of acceptable documents can be found at www.maine.gov/sos/bmv).

Maine businesses have the right to determine whether or not they will offer discounts and they have control over what standards they set to qualify their customers for these benefits, said Secretary Dunlap, There are a number of businesses that have already committed to accepting this new military designation for their discounts and I am hopeful that others will follow their lead.

For more information on the Military Service Designation, please visit the Bureau of Motor Vehicles registrations website.

Businesses that are interested in accepting the military service designation for their military/veteran discounts are encouraged to contact the Secretary of State’s Office (207) 626-8400 or sos.office@maine.gov.
