Intermediate/Provisional Suspensions

AGES 15-18
A license issued to a person under the age of 18 is an intermediate license for 270 days, which includes several restrictions on operation. If the holder of an intermediate license is convicted of violating one of those restrictions, the intermediate license restrictions will be extended for an additional period of 270 days from the date of the infraction. The additional period of restriction may extend beyond the licensee's 18th birthday. Additionally, an intermediate license suspension will be imposed.

  • First violation: 60-day license suspension,
  • Second violation: 180-day suspension,
  • Third or subsequent violation: 1-year suspension.

Depending on the violation, additional requirements may also be imposed prior to a suspension being restored, such as:

  • An approved driver traffic offender program that meets Maine's Motor Vehicle restoration requirements (Upon completion of a course you will need a copy of the course completion certificate to submit to the Secretary of State for restoration of your driving privileges).
  • $200.00 reinstatement fee
  • Road re-examination
  • Community service if imposed by the court

Note: Additionally the operator's license is considered a provisional license for two years following initial issuance. During the provisional license period, the intermediate license restrictions apply for the first 270 days and additionally a conviction for any moving violation will result in license suspension, as outlined in the "Ages 18-20" section.

AGES 18-20
The first license issued to a new applicant who is between the ages of 18-20 is a juvenile provisional license for a period of two years. The provisional license is in effect for a full 2-year period as long as the first license that was issued occurred prior to the 21st birthday.  The provisional phase does not end when a person turns 21. If you are a juvenile provisional license holder and are within the first two years of your license, a conviction for any moving violation will result in the suspensions listed below. Additionally, if you are convicted of operating under the influence prior to reaching 21 years of age, your license will be viewed as a juvenile provisional license for law enforcement purposes, even if you have already held the license for two years.

  • First violation: 30-day suspension
  • Second violation: 180-day suspension
  • Third and subsequent violation: 1-year suspension

Depending on the violation, additional requirements may be imposed prior to a suspension being restored, such as:

  • An approved driver traffic offender program that meets Maine's Motor Vehicle restoration requirements (Upon completion of a course you will need a copy of the course completion certificate to submit to the Secretary of State for restoration of your driving privileges).
  • $200.00 reinstatement fee
  • Road re-examination
  • Community service if imposed by the court
