Health Insurance Basics

There is no longer a tax penalty for not having minimum essential coverage. However, if you don't have major medical health insurance, you'll be on your own for any major health care costs.

Short-term, limited duration options may offer lower premiums, but they won't cover as much. Short-term, limited duration insurance is not available through the Marketplace, but you may see it offered elsewhere. It allows for coverage to fill temporary coverage gaps. While these plans are typically cheaper than the Marketplace and other individual market health plans, there are usually limited benefits, broader exclusions and higher levels of consumer cost-sharing, which in the end can cost you more. For more information, read the Bureau's tip sheet on Short-Term, Limited Duration Plans and see some examples of how much this type of plan will pay if you have a baby, need to manage diabetes, or break a bone and go to the emergency room.
