Maine Historic Preservation Commission Awards Over $2.14 Million Dollars in Round 1 of the Historic Community Buildings Grant Program
The Maine Historic Preservation Commission is pleased to announce the award of over $2.14 million dollars to fourteen Historic Community Buildings throughout the state. In the November 2024 general election, Maine voters approved a $10 million dollar grant program for the restoration of historic community buildings owned by governmental and non-profit organizations. The historic community buildings that are the focus of these grants are either listed in the National Register of Historic Places or have been nominated for listing by the Commission; are open to the public; and support the social, educational, or cultural life of Maine people.
Round 1 awards were made to the following entities and projects:
- Abyssinian Meeting House, Portland – balcony and stair reconstruction
- First Universalist Church of Norway, Norway – belfry/bell tower restoration
- Christ Episcopal Church, Gardiner – bell tower spire reconstruction
- Jonathan Fisher House, Blue Hill – exterior restoration
- Victoria Mansion, Portland – chimney reconstruction
- Center Theater, Dover-Foxcroft – roof replacement
- Liberty Hall, Machiasport – life/safety code upgrades
- The Waldo Theater, Waldoboro – HVAC upgrades
- Hubbard Free Library, Hallowell – masonry repairs
- Maine Historical Society, Portland – HVAC upgrades
- Maine Maritime Museum, Bath – Percy & Small Shipyard buildings roof replacement
- Bell Hill Meeting House, Otisfield – exterior restoration
- Maine State Building, Poland – exterior restoration
- Abbe Museum, Bar Harbor – exterior restoration
The Commission expects to open Round 2 of the grant program in late summer/early fall of 2026.
