Characteristics and County of Residence for Continued Unemployment Claimants

The Maine Department of Labor's unemployment insurance programs provide unemployment benefits to eligible workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own, (as determined under Maine State law), and meet certain other eligibility requirements. Congress enacted new temporary federal unemployment programs under the CARES Act passed in March of 2020 (which were extended by the Continued Assistance for Unemployed Workers Act of 2020), which included Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC). The Federal unemployment benefit programs ended on September 4, 2021. In addition to temporary federal programs, Maine triggered onto state Extended Benefits (EB) in May 2020. The state EB program is only in effect during times of high unemployment, and Maine triggered off in November 2020.
