Shagoury receives health policy award

AUGUSTA – Last week, Rep. Dan Shagoury, D-Hallowell, received the Dementia Policy Champion Award from the Maine Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.

Shagoury was recognized for sponsoring and working on the successful passage into law of LD 1677 last year. The bill codified into law efforts to implement a strategic approach to addressing Alzheimer’s in Maine. This included making permanent the Maine Alzheimer’s Prevention Program at the Maine Center for Disease Control and the Healthy Brain Initiative Stakeholder Group, and maintaining the State Plan on Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias.

“Receiving this award is an honor, and I am grateful to the health care workers, caretakers and volunteers who work every day with Maine families dealing with this terrible disease,” said Shagoury.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, including 29,600 Mainers over the age of 65.

Shagoury is serving his second term in the Maine House and represents the communities of Hallowell, Manchester and West Gardiner. He is a member of the Health and Human Services Committee.
