AUGUSTA – A new law sponsored by Rep. Drew Gattine, D-Westbrook, to help prevent domestic violence by funding certified intervention programs is now in effect.
LD 666 provides $500,000 in one-time funding for Maine’s Certified Domestic Violence Intervention Programs (CDVIPs), which are court-ordered and proven to be effective. However, many programs throughout Maine have been at risk of shutting down due to lack of funding.
“This investment is not just a matter of financial necessity. It is a smart, cost-effective investment in the safety, well-being and future of Maine families,” said Gattine. “Maine’s Certified Domestic Violence Intervention Programs provide life-saving services, and this funding will help create safer communities across our state.”
Domestic abuse contributes to nearly half of all homicides in Maine. The state’s network of CDVIPs works to prevent future violence and protect victims, including children, from further harm at a fraction of the cost of incarceration. They also help connect participants with substance use and mental health treatment or employment and educational services, as needed.
Gattine is serving his sixth non-consecutive term in the Maine House and represents parts of Westbrook, Scarborough and Saco. He is House chair of the Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee.
