Description:
Abstract:
VOLMON24 provides information on water quality monitoring points along the coast of Maine that have been sampled by volunteer water quality monitoring organizations. Site locations are monitored for a variety of parameters including temperature, salinity, fecal coliform and dissolved oxygen. [Contact the monitoring groups directly for information about the parameters they monitor at each site in specific sampling seasons.] Data from the monitoring programs provides information on non-point source pollution impacting locations along the coast of Maine. Many location sites are monitored in conjunction with the Maine Department of Marine Resources' shellfish area classification program. Volunteer monitoring may assist in the identification of additional potential sources of bacterial contamination at the MEDMR sites. The coverage was compiled and developed by staff and students at Southern Maine Technical College. Point locations were either collected by SMTC staff and students or provided as shapefiles or GPS coordinate positions by individual volunteer water quality monitoring organizations. Point location data was developed to be displayed on a USGS topographic map base at 1:24000 scale.
Occasionally GPS points did not compile well on USGS 24K base map features; these points were moved to display monitoring locations with reference to base map features. Actual GPS coordinate information on all points was preserved as a coverage attribute in the database file.
Purpose:
The dataset provides centralized information on water quality monitoring sites maintained by volunteer water quality monitoring organizations along the coast of Maine. The volunteer monitoring site information may be used to guide the development of future monitoring programs or projects. Data from the monitoring programs provides a baseline of information on non-point source pollution impacting selected locations along the coast of Maine.

Attribute Accuracy:
Attribute Accuracy Report:
The coverage attributes have been carefully examined for accuracy based on existing source materials and limitations of scale. Attribute information was collected from the individual organizations as well as created by SMTC staff and students from a variety of sources. Attribute data has been reviewed by participating organizations.
Logical Consistency Report:
The point data corresponds to water quality monitoring locations. Site locations were verified by each of the volunteer monitoring organization. Occasionally, GPS points did not compile well on the USGS 24K base map features; these points were moved to display monitoring locations with reference to base map features. Actual GPS coordinate information on all points was preserved as a coverage attribute.
Completeness Report: Data set is complete.
Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Points collected by GPS: 2 to 5 meters differential correction. Points that were digitized: 12 meters. Point locations were either collected by SMTC staff and students or provided as shapefiles or GPS coordinate positions by individual volunteer water quality monitoring organizations. Sample points collected by SMTC were collected using Trimble GeoExplorer receivers. Data files were differentially corrected to provide sub meter accuracy. Data collected by GPS was differentially corrected and has an accuracy of 2-5 meters. In general, PDOP values for the receivers were kept below 6.0 and Signal to Noise Ratio was greater than 6.0 resulting in sub-meter accuracy. At some locations, the PDOP mask was increased to values greater than 6.0 due to dense forest cover and elevation masks. Base station files were acquired from the base station maintained in Falmouth, ME by Maine Technical Source or from the University of Maine Community Base Station, depending upon which station was closer to the point locations. Shapefiles provided directly by the organizations were developed through a variety of methods including: digitizing point locations directly on USGS 24K quad maps; identifying the latitude and longitude for points and entering the information into a database; and collecting point locations through use of GPS unit. Location coordinates collected in this manner were subsequently provided to SMTC.
Quantitative Horizontal Positional Accuracy Assessment:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Value: 5

Other Citation Details:
This citation is for the first official Standard Geographic Code endorsed and adopted by the Governor of Maine, on July 1, 1971. Geocodes have undergone subsequent revisions, all of which were "officially" rolled back to this 1971 list by Maine's Information Services Policy Board (ISPB), as of January 2000. In 1971, all Maine state agencies were requested to implement these five digit geocodes, in agency information systems, to build a base of data for Maine's Minor Civil Divisions (MCDs) and to promote data sharing. Data coded by MCD may subsequently be summarized by any other type of region, administrative district, natural area, etc. The first two digits of the geocode represent the federal code (FIPS) for Maine counties, the remaining three digits uniquely identify each of Maine's MCDs and Reservations. As an information service to state agencies and the public, geocodes for Maine, are now maintained, updated and made available for download, in comma delimited text and .dbf format, through the Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems (MEGIS) Data Catalog at http://megis.maine.gov/catalog/ , "Tables" link.

Data was provided by Friends of Casco Bay for the dataset VOLMON24. Data was collected originally using a Garmand 45. Points were ground truthed. A number of points were plotted on a 1:24000 USGS topographic map by hand and the latitude and longitude were recorded into the existing database. Additional site locations were collected using a differential GPS unit. This information was imported into ArcView and a shapefile of the positions were created.

Data was provided by four different watershed organizations - (Pleasant River Watershed Council, Dennys River Watershed Council, Narraguagas River Watershed Council, Ducktrap River/Coastal Mountains Land Trust. Information on the Ducktrap River/Coastal Mountains Land Trust can be found under the cmltvolmon citation. Water quality monitoring points along the Machias and East Machias rivers were collected by SMTC. Pleasant River Watershed Council data points were collected using a Trimble GeoExplorer GPS unit. All sites were not taken at exact monitoring point, most notably site PLE1. Site locations were provided as coordinates to SMTC. Dennys River Watershed Council site locations were collected using a Rockwell PLGR96+ Federal GPS receiver. Site locations were provided as coordinates to SMTC. Narraguagus River Watershed Council point locations were collected with a differential GPS unit. Locations were provided as coordinates to SMTC.
Process Step:
Process Description:
VOLMON24 contains water quality point locations maintained by volunteer water quality monitoring organizations along the coast of Maine. The shapefile was created in ArcView 3.2. Information was either provided directly by the individual monitoring organizations in the form of shapefiles or GPS coordinates or was collected by Southern Maine Technical College students and staff, with the assistance of each of the organizations. Points that were provided as coordinates to SMTC were entered into ArcView and a shapefile was created. Points that were digitized were compiled on 1:24000 USGS topographic maps. All points were visually inspected using 1:24000 USGS maps by the individual organizations. Points that were not in the proper location in relation to base map features were moved to display correct relative location. Original GPS coordinates of all points are maintained in the attribute table as latitude and longitude. Files that were collected or digitized as NAD27 were converted to NAD83 using ArcInfo 8.

Overview Description:
Entity and Attribute Overview:
Location of water quality monitoring sites maintained by volunteer water quality monitoring organizations associated with Maine Coastal Program. Attribute information was collected from the individual organizations as well as created by SMTC staff and students from a variety of sources. Attribute information includes information on SITE# used by the individual organization, water body sampled, water classification, location description, longitude and latitude of each position, name of organization sampling the site, and date that the point location information was collected.
Entity and Attribute Detail Citation:
The ArcView shapefile and ArcGIS geodatabase formats, commonly used for Maine GIS data, carry default identifiers and attributes that are software generated and/or important for internal recordkeeping. These are listed here to avoid repetition for every layer, and may not be repeated in the attribute descriptions and definitions of each layer. Common software generated identifiers and attributes in Maine GIS data include: FID (feature identifier), Shape (feature geometry), OBJECTID and SHAPE_lengt. In addition, most GIS formats will carry fields for PERIMETER, AREA and/or LENGTH according to feature geometry. These fields are typically available by default, with the units based on coordinate system or projection units of GIS data. Most GIS software packages also provide a means to calculate these values. It is important to test any columns containing PERIMETER, AREA or LENGTH values before using them for analysis purposes. These important values can be carried from format to format and become out-dated. Verify that the values are correct. Also, in your GIS software, please view the properties of data layers for the map units used to calculate these fields, and for the units set for display purposes.

MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.
