Title: RailRouteSys
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data
Online_Linkage: <http://www.maine.gov/megis/catalog>
Description:
Abstract:
RailRouteSys is a statewide railroad coverage for Maine at 1:24000 scale or better. The data was extracted from MEDOT.MErail24 files and an updated database by MaineDOT staff starting in 2009. Attributes include: Route Code, Calibrated, Owner, Operator, Track type, Status, Passenger, and Common Name. Attribute and linework accuracy were verified using USGS, MEGIS, Maine Department of Transportation resources, and some local knowledge. Attributes of sidings and yards is difficult to determine, and has not been fully checked. In yards, exact line accuracy may be lacking. Accuracy of main and branch routes is expected to be very good. The attribution of the dataset was updated in 2011 with information provided by MaineDOT. In October of 2006, MaineDOT rail coordinators George Jackman and Nate Moulton helped to identify the rail routes owned by the State of Maine and managed by MaineDOT. The state owned rail (including MaineDOT managed)was updated in April of 2011 by the Results and Information Office of the Maine Department of Transportation.
Purpose:
RailRouteSys provides statewide railroad transportation coverage. Data at this scale is suitable for detailed studies and local planning. Not for use in scales greater than 1:24000.

Users must assume responsibility in determining the usability of this data for their purposes. Digital maps retain the accuracy of their source materials. The best use of data mapped at scales of 1:500,000 and 1:250,000 is in statewide planning and studies; at 1:100,000 in regional planning and studies; at 1:62,500 and 1:24,000 in detailed studies and local planning; and at 1:12,000 and 1:5,000 or larger scales in parcel level studies and detailed local planning. In the use of Maine GIS data, please check sources, scale, accuracy, currentness and other available information. Please confirm that you are using the correct copy of both data and metadata from the Maine GIS Data Catalog. The Maine Office of Geographic Information Systems (MEGIS) provides notice of updates and corrections directly to the Maine GIS Technical Group and Maine GIS Users, through the MEGISTECH and MEGISUSER list servers. To subscribe please contact MeGIS through the Maine Office of Information Technology (OIT) Customer Support Center (CSC) at (207) 624-7700. To request data correction in, or provide updates to Maine GIS data, please use the contact information contained in the metadata. Updates, corrections, and feedback, incorporated in the Maine GIS database are made in accordance with "Data Standards for Maine Geographic Information Systems", 2002, and coordinated by MEGIS in consultation with the Maine GIS Executive Council.

Process_Description:
The original data sources were MErail24 (provided by the Maine Office of GIS), a static copy of UrbanRail (an internal MaineDOT dataset that had been maintained for cartographic purposes within urban areas) and orthophotography provided by the Maine Geolibrary and USGS.
A new SDE Feature Class dataset was created to establish routes to manage rail data in a Linear Reference System (LRS). A topology was applied to the UrbanRail and MErail24 data, and the gaps and dangles edited. Rail centerlines were adjusted to line-up with their location observed in orthophotography (resolution ranged from 6-inch to 1 meter pixels). These edits were completed using editing tools in ESRI ArcGIS 9.3 and 10.
To create the routes, the “Route Editing” tool bar (a standard ArcMap toolset) was used. Each route was assigned a unique identifier (route code). The ROUTE_NAME was derived from MErail24 and information from MaineDOT personnel.
After creating routes, some quality control was performed to detect and correct any duplicate route numbers and multiple segments. In the master Rail Route System, all routes are represented by a single, continuous line wherever possible.
Attributes are managed in event tables associated with the routes. Quality control measures are performed on these attribute values with knowledgeable MaineDOT personnel.
A custom tool was used to produce this segmented shapefile through segmentation of the rail routes based on the values and measures managed in the associated event tables.
