NOAA Historic Nautical Charts

This is a composite of old nautical charts for Maine dating from 1858 to 1909 and of varying scales between 1:10,000 and 1:80,000. The Web Mapping Service (WMS) composites these images at varying scales, so that when zoomed out only the 80K charts are shown, but as one zooms in, appropriate fine-scaled charts are shown. The WMS was created using GDAL software to mosaic charts together and then tile the mosaic product out to a grid system. The original maps themselves were downloaded from NOAA's website. Where several charts for an area were available digitally, we opted to pick the one that had the best resolution and those that were 8-bit instead of 1-bit.
