Description:
Abstract:
These data depict authorized service areas of electic utilities in the State of Maine. These data were submitted to the Maine PUC by the various utilities as part of their 2009 reporting requirements under MPUC Rules - Chapter 140.
Purpose:
These data were developed to provide Maine State Government staff with a general overview of each represented utility's authorized service area in Maine. Many of these polygons are not exceptionally accurate (spatially) or are of a somewhat undetermined / ill-defined spatial acuracy, so users of these data are STRONGLY cautioned against using these data for scientific or engineering purposes, or to accurately determine utility service in small areas or at single sites - especially in areas near the boundary(ies) of service areas. An example of an appropriate use of these data would be their inclusion in map products designed as educational tools with which to inform an audience about the existence of, as well as the broad, regional nature of service territories.
Supplemental_Information:
This metadata record only describes data submitted by electric utilities during the 2009 MPUC Chapter 140 Reporting Cycle.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
No formal tests were devised for attribute accuracy other than checking transfer of values from the original data sources to the resulting GIS data layers because attribute accuracy was best ascertained by the original contributor (utility) of the source data. See also the Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Logical consistency checks were conducted during preparation of the spatial features and attributes importation / mapping. Other than the addition of the "legend type" field all attributes are the same as the source datasets. However, source datasets may have included additional attribute fields that were not mapped over to this data layer.
Completeness_Report:
This dataset is not complete because not all utilities were required to submit data in 2009 under the requirements of Chapter 140.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:

ArcView Shapefile Format
Format_Information_Content:
MEGIS has made all vector layers, in the Maine GIS Internet Data Catalog, available in ESRI's ArcView shapefile format. A shapefile is a simple non-topological format that stores the geometry and attribute information for a set of geographic features as a set of vector (point, line, polygon) coordinates. Shapefiles draw quickly and directly in ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcExplorer. Shapefiles are a compatible data type for many other types of GIS software. Three files are fundamental to each shapefile: .shp stores the feature geometry (shape and location information); .shx stores the index of the feature geometry; .dbf a dBASE (TM) file stores the attribute information for the features. Other index files may be created to help speed analysis and query: these file formats are .sbn .sbx .ain .aix .fbn and .fbx. In addition you may find projection .prj, and metadata .xml, files associated with shapefiles.
