Summary

ORTHO_BP data were purchased to provide updated orthoimagery in the Baxter State Park region, an area which would otherwise not be covered under the GeoLibrary Board orthoimagery purchase. The imagery, at 60cm resolution and 2.3m RMS horizontal accuracy, are useful in many large-scale mapping applications for the park area.

Description

Other citation details ORTHO_BP contains high resolution QuickBird orthorectified satellite imagery from Digital Globe. These digital images result from pan-sharpening of multispectral data to panchromatic data, followed by orthorectification and mosaicking of digital satellite image scenes. The images were collected Oct 3, 2004 at approximately 3:28PM local time by the QB02 Satellite using the QB sensor at an altitude of 450km. The sensor viewing angle was 15.33 degrees off nadir at the time of collection. Sun azimuth was 162.1 degrees from true North and sun elevation was 38.5 degrees above the horizon at the time of collection. Each pixel represents a planimetric square 60cm on a side on the ground. The satellite data are presented in 4 bands (1 = blue light 450-520nm; 2 = green light 520-600nm; 3 = red light 630-690nm; 4 = near-infrared 760-900nm). To create a true-color image, the user should assign band 1 to blue, band 2 to green, and band 3 to red (3-2-1 combination, which is typically opposite how most GIS software will show it). The data are pan-sharpened from Quickbird's multispectral (4-band) 2.44m sensor to the 61-cm panchromatic (445-900nm) sensor. The data were resampled to 60cm pixels during the reprojection process to UTM Zone 19N NAD83, which is the current projection. Each band is captured in 11 bits and presented here as 16-bit. The images were radiometrically balanced to provide a smooth mosaic. Orthorectification was completed using 11 ground control points and 86 tie-points, using the National Elevation Dataset as the terrain reference. This resulted in imagery with a combined RMS error of 2.3m. This imagery is LICENSED from Digital Globe, available to the following GIS users: Maine state agency GIS users, including the Baxter Park Authority US Fish and Wildlife Service in Maine National Park Service in Maine NOAA Coastal Services Center EROS Data Center Maine Audubon Society The Nature Conservancy, Maine office Maine Appalachian Trail Club Towns of Millinocket, E. Millinocket, Medway, Patten, Staceyville. Use by any other individual is a violation of the license agreement and illegal. These data were provided via a grant from NASA, administered through the Institute for the Application of Geospatial Technology (IAGT) at Cayuga Community College, to provide funding for state and municipal remote sensing needs. Maine's portion of this grant was allocated to imagery purchase for Baxter State Park

Measure description Orthorectification was completed using 11 ground control points and 86 tie-points, using the National Elevation Dataset as the terrain reference. This resulted in imagery with a combined RMS error of 2.3m. The accuracy and quality of the Digital Globe orthoimagery meets National Map Accuracy Standards at 1:3,600 scale, plus/minus 3 meters or 10 feet, and is accurate for mapping applications at 1" = 300'.
