To provide high-resolution recent orthophoto base for municipal mapping applications in Augusta, Manchester, Hallowell, Farmingdale, and Gardiner.
This OGC-compliant web map service (WMS) presents 1' and 6" orthoimagery for an area encompassing all of Augusta, Manchester, Hallowell, Farmingdale, and Garinder, Maine. Portions of other adjacent towns are covered including Belgrade, Chelsea, Dresden, Litchfield, Pittston, Randolph, Readfield, Richmond, Sidney, Vassalboro, West Gardiner, Windsor, and Winthrop. The data were collected in a single session on May 6, 2008. LiDAR data were also collected and are available elsewhere. The 6" imagery is available for the northern part of the area, Augusta and Manchester principally. 1' imagery is for the southern area of the collect. The data were collected and processed by James W. Sewall Co of Old Town, Maine. The LiDAR data were collected and processed by Photo Science, Inc., of Lexington, KY. The scale of 1:7920 was used to produce a mapping scale of 1" = 660'.

Orthophotos went through a rigorous QAQC process. All data is seamless from one tile to the next, no gaps or no data areas.
The one foot tiles cover a portion of the area of interest. The six foot tiles will cover the remaining area of interest.
45 control points were dispersed evenly throughout the entire area of interest. 26 of the control points fall in the 1' data.

Aerial photos were rectified and mosaiced together to produce final orthophoto deliverables.
The images were rectified using a 10 meter DEM and Applications Master software and then mosaiced using OrthoVista.
The TIF tiles were compressed to JPEG2000 tiles using open-source software GDAL. Overviews were created as TIFF files using GDAL. The images were then served out from a MapServer-based WMS server.
Orthophotos have either a 6" or 1' pixel and are named by the United States National Grid schema.
Orthorectified GeoTIFF files represent "tiles" 1500 x 1500 meters cut at even 1500 meter grid lines with no overedge.
Users must assume responsibility to determine the usability of this data for their purposes.
The Maine Office of GIS and the GeoLibrary Board provide web mapping services to distribute aerial photos and other digital data. A WMS is not a web application which you can see in a web browser; rather, it requires you to add the service to a GIS software application.
