Join New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) for a tour through a recently harvested area of Frenchman Bay Community Forest in Hancock, Maine, where you'll witness sustainable, climate-smart forestry in action! This approximately 2-hour guided hike will offer a first-hand look at Exemplary Forestry practices, including crop tree release and white pine pruning that support the forests long-term health and resilience. Ask questions, explore the landscape, and discover how NEFF is shaping the future of New Englands forests. This event will take place rain or shine.
What to Expect
- Moderate Hike: 1 to 1.5 miles through harvest debris
- Expert Guidance: NEFF Managing Forester Mike Redante, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Senior Resource Biologist Joe Roy, and Maine Forest Service District Forester Steve MacDonald will explain sustainable, climate-smart harvesting techniques and how forest management can enhance wildlife habitat
Who Should Participate?
This moderate hike requires participants to be in good physical health and capable of:
- Walking up to 1.5 miles over uneven terrain
- Navigating rocks, roots, and other natural obstacles
What to Bring
- Long pants and appropriate clothing (hat, comfortable hiking boots or shoes)
- Insect repellent (DEET or similar recommended for ticks and mosquitoes)
- Water and snacks (if desired)
- Medically necessary items (EpiPen, inhaler, etc.)
Where to Meet
Participants should meet at the Maine Forest Service field office on Route 1 in Hancock. From there, well carpool to the site.
Important Notes
- Children of all ages are welcome but must be supervised due to the challenging terrain
- Arrive 10-15 minutes early at the designated meetup location
