EMS Instructor License

INSTRUCTOR COORDINATOR LICENSURE CLASSES & RENEWAL

Maine EMS requires the lead instructor of an initial licensure class (such as EMR, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic) to hold a Instructor Coordinator (I/C) license.  There are occasionally other courses, protocol or skills changes that Maine EMS designate must be taught by a licensed I/C.  Maine EMS does not require an I/C to teach or coordinate a continuing education course (CEH), but the skills and tools gained from I/C education are valuable teaching CEH courses.

In most cases, this license matches your Maine EMS clinician license level.

INITIAL I/C LICENSURE

The currently approved pathways that can be used for an initial EMS Instructor Coordinator license are

  1. Successful completion of the NASEMSE Level I Instructor course, or
  2. Successful completion of a Pro-Board Fire & Emergency Services Instructor I & II course with a Pro-Board certificate, or
  3. Successful completion of the Prodigy 40-hour Basic Instructor course.
  4. If you are currently licensed as an instructor in another state, contact our Licensing Team for possible options.

To apply for an Instructor Coordinator License

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Read and understand the Maine EMS Rules, Chapter 9 "Instructor Coordinator License"
  3. Have a digital copy of your initial I/C course from the list above.
    1. Note that you must apply within 2 years of completion of this course.
  4. Submit a completed application for I/C licensure
    1. To complete the application, open your Maine EMS eLicensing account and complete the "EMS Instructor Coordinator NEW application"
  5. Evaluation of the application may take up to 10 business days.
  6. Initial Maine EMS I/C licenses will have an expiration date of up to 2 years, based on the completion date of your initial I/C course.
  7. Please note: You do not have to be licensed as an EMS clinician to obtain a Maine I/C license, however, you must provide proof of education consistent with current Maine EMS Education Standards at the:
    1. EMT level, if applying for an I/C-EMT license.
    2. Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) level, if applying for an I/C – AEMT license.
    3. Paramedic level, if applying for an I/C – Paramedic license.

I/C RENEWAL

Renewed Maine Instructor Coordinator licenses are valid for a 2 year period and can be reviewed on your eLicensing page.  To renew your Maine EMS I/C license, the requirements are 16 hours of education topics. 

Teaching Initial Licensure Courses

  • A Maine I/C may use up to 6 hours of teaching during an initial licensure class towards their required I/C CEHs.  Courses that are CEH courses or alphabet soup classes (such as ACLS, PHTLS, etc) cannot be used for this..
  • To receive these credits, you must have the training center director, or designee, complete CEH Credit for EMS Licensure Courses Form (PDF) (8/2/24) and upload this to your eLicensing account

To renew an Instructor Coordinator License

Maine EMS oversees EMS education and classes leading to licensure but does not directly teach or deliver these classes.
