Overnight I-95 Closures to Impact Augusta Traffic as Western Avenue Bridge Project Progresses

AUGUSTA - The next phase of the Western Avenue Bridge Project will see precast bridge units (PBUs) placed into their permanent locations and involve overnight closures of I-95 Southbound between late Tuesday, July 29, through early Thursday morning, July 31.

I-95 Southbound will be closed from 11:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 29 to 5:00 A.M. Wednesday morning, July 30 and will continue again late Wednesday night, July 30 into Thursday morning, July 31 from 11:00 P.M. to 5:00 A.M.

While the PBUs are placed, I-95 Southbound will be detoured around the construction zone.

Single lane closures and detours will take place according to the following schedule:

  • Monday 7/28 - Tuesday 7/29, 10:00 P.M. to 6 A.M. single lane closures
  • Tuesday 7/29 - Wednesday 7/30, 10:00 P.M. to 6 A.M. single lane closures, 11:00 P.M. to 5 A.M. DETOUR I-95 Southbound
  • Wednesday 7/30 - Thursday 7/31, 10:00 P.M. to 6 A.M. single lane closures, 11:00 P.M. to 5 A.M. DETOUR I-95 Southbound

State Police on I-95 Southbound will send traffic onto Exit 109B (which is now closed but will be open for this detour).

At the end of Exit 109B, local Augusta police will guide traffic across the intersection onto Whitten Road. Detour signs will lead traffic down Whitten Road and back onto I-95 Southbound at the temporary connector from Whitten Road.

As is always the case, weather and other factors may impact the proposed calendar. MaineDOT will provide updates on the project as needed.

On-site construction for this project started in November 2023. All construction is scheduled to be done in June 2026.

The contractor for this project is Reed & Reed, Inc. of Woolwich. The contract amount is approximately $30 million.
